The Enigmatic Inspiration of Serge Lutens

Serge Lutens is a renowned creator whose universe is absolutely unique. Indeed, he has the art of drawing inspiration from always unexpected objects or places. Moreover, most of his perfumes bear rather unusual names. And La Vierge de Fer is no exception to the rule. But what could this name possibly conceal? In reality, La Vierge de Fer was originally the name of a torture instrument. What a strange idea to turn it into a perfume! In fact, Serge Lutens saw in this symbol an echo of his own wounds and sacrifices. Nevertheless, do not think that this fragrance is a dark and opulent juice. La Vierge de Fer is rather an airy and floral perfume whose main ingredient is the lily. However, like all of Serge Lutens's perfumes, La Vierge de Fer still plays on a contrast between shadow and light. The lily is revisited here from a mysterious angle. It is at once green and light like lily of the valley or jasmine, while retaining a metallic and fresh aspect similar to that of aldehydes. The whole opens with a very vegetal and fruity aspect. It is in its heart that the lily literally explodes. Finally, everything concludes with spicier tonalities, revealing the creator's darkest side.

La Vierge de Fer, a Tribute to a Symbolic Flower

If Serge Lutens chose to work around this ingredient, it is also because it is one of the most emblematic raw materials in perfumery. Traces of the lily can be found among the Egyptians. They used it for their embalming rituals, and it had a sacred character. The Romans also considered the lily to be a gentle and very noble flower. The Greeks, on the other hand, placed it above all else. They called it "the flower of flowers" and associated it with the goddess Hera. Furthermore, according to mythology, the lily was actually born from a drop of Hera's breast milk that fell to Earth while she was nursing Heracles, the illegitimate son of Zeus and a mortal. Quite a symbol! Moreover, Aphrodite, goddess of love, is said to have envied the purity of this plant and to have added an obscene pistil to it in order to make it less beautiful. Undeniably, the lily seems to possess that duality of shadow and light so dear to Serge Lutens. Likewise, its religious dimension particularly appeals to the creator, who holds an absolute fascination for Catholicism. It is therefore entirely logical that Serge Lutens chose to pay tribute to this sacred plant in his creation.

" The religion of iron needed a Virgin and the Virgin,
a lily.

- Have you smelled it?
- Yes.
- What is it like?
- As striking as the fleur-de-lis seal branded on the arms of female criminals.
- Really?!
- And in the base, as piercing as a hair shirt against the skin. In fact, a sublime torment!"
