The Couturier Paco Rabanne
Paco Rabanne was born in 1934 in Pasaïa, in the Spanish Basque Country, under the name Francisco Rabaneda y Cuervo. As early as 1939, the Spanish Civil War prompted his mother — a senior hand at Balenciaga — to move to France. Spanish at heart and French by adoption, Francisco Rabaneda came to be known as Paco Rabanne.
A true non-conformist, Paco Rabanne swiftly conquered the world of fashion. After studying architecture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris — an experience that kept him in constant contact with the major arts — he launched, in the early 1960s, into the artisanal production of decorative accessories for the great Couture houses.
In 1966, he presented his first Collection, a genuine Manifesto: "12 Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials", adorned with sequins and rhodoid panels. Clothing thus became a plastic expression of its time. Amid scandal and applause alike, Paco Rabanne never ceased to challenge the way fashion was conceived and presented, foreshadowing the conceptual direction adopted by leading designers at the turn of the 21st century.
In 1969, Paco Rabanne also revolutionised the world of fragrance by creating his own line, which has never stopped pushing established boundaries. Calandre, his first women's fragrance, was followed by Paco Rabanne pour Homme and numerous other international successes, most recently the Black XS line and of course the Million franchise (1 Million in 2008 and Lady Million in 2010).
