Sol de Janeiro: Cheirosa Body Mists and Brazilian-Inspired Body Care

Sol de Janeiro

Sol de Janeiro is a body care and fragrance brand founded in New York in 2015 by Heela Yang, with Camila Pierotti and Marc Capra. Its imagery comes from Brazil and its beach culture: a joyful attitude to the body, generous textures and fragrances worn all over the skin. The name plays on Rio de Janeiro and literally means "January sun". The brand launched with three products, including the one that remains its signature, the Brazilian Bum Bum Cream; it has been majority-owned by the L'Occitane group since 2021.

A Fragrance Before a Body Care Product

At Sol de Janeiro, every body care product is also a fragrance. The Bum Bum Cream carries the Cheirosa 62 accord of creamy pistachio, salted caramel and vanilla, and the same scent appears in a mist, a solid balm, a lotion, a shower gel, a scrub and a deodorant. "Cheirosa" is Portuguese for something that smells delicious: the brand made it the name of its fragrance collection, along with the idea of a scent built up in layers, from shower gel to mist, rather than left to a single bottle.

The Cheirosa Collection: One Fragrance per Number

The mists and balms in the Cheirosa collection are named with a number that refers, according to the brand, to a year or a moment in Brazilian culture: 59 for the rise of bossa nova, 68 for the Tropicália movement, 71 for Rio's pastry-making tradition. The styles range from gourmand, with the pistachio of 62 or the caramelised vanilla of 71, to fruity floral, with the pink dragon fruit and Brazilian jasmine of 68, or the guava and orchid of 48.

Body Care Designed Step by Step

The body care range follows a routine: cleanse with a creamy or exfoliating shower gel, scrub, then nourish with a cream, butter or oil. Several formulas highlight ingredients associated with Brazil, such as cupuaçu butter, guarana or açaí oil, and many use one of the Cheirosa fragrances.

Which Cheirosa Mist Should You Choose?

The collection is best read by fragrance family. On the gourmand side, Cheirosa 62 combines creamy pistachio, salted caramel, jasmine and vanilla; Cheirosa 71 centres on caramelised vanilla, roasted macadamia and tonka bean; Cheirosa 59 Delícia Drench blends vanilla orchid, sweet violet, sandalwood and creamy amber.

On the fruity floral side, Cheirosa 68 Beija Flor opens with pink dragon fruit before a heart of Brazilian jasmine and a sea air note; Cheirosa 48 plays on guava, orchid, vanilla and rose musk; Cheirosa 91 brings together passion fruit, honey caramel and rose. In a warmer register, Cheirosa 40 pairs plum with dark amber, jasmine, vanilla woods and musk; Cheirosa 76 moves from blackcurrant to jasmine, freesia and an ambery woody base; Cheirosa 87 Rio Radiance mixes coconut milk, tuberose and creamy vanilla.

Mist, Balm or Layered Fragrance

The mist is sprayed generously over the body, hair or clothes, and reapplied through the day. The Jelly balms, 6.2 g alcohol-free sticks, come in Cheirosa 40, 62 and 68: a pocket-sized format for top-ups. Products with the same number layer together: Cheirosa 62, for example, runs from the Brazilian Play shower gel to the Body Badalada lotion, through to the mist and the Rio Deo deodorant.

The Bum Bum Routine

The Bum Bum line brings together the cream that launched the brand, formulated with guarana extract, cupuaçu butter and plant-based squalane, a 220 g scrub and a Firmeza oil that combines guarana caffeine, açaí oil and microalgae extract. The cream and the scrub both carry the Cheirosa 62 fragrance.

Creams and Butters: Four Textures

Beyond Bum Bum, the brand offers several body textures: the Rosa Charmosa Dewy Cream, with a light whipped texture, scented with Cheirosa 91; the Delícia Drench Body Butter, rich, with bacuri butter and hibiscus, designed for very dry skin; the Beija Flor Elasti-Cream, with cacay oil and plant-based squalane, scented with Cheirosa 68; and the Bom Dia Bright Body Cream, with fruit acids, vitamin C ester and willow bark, which is also available as an AHA BHA exfoliating shower gel.

Hair, Lips and Deodorant

The range extends to hair with the sulphate-free Brazilian Joia shampoo and conditioner, designed for fine to medium hair; to lips with the Brazilian Kiss Cupuaçu Lip Butter; and to the Rio Deo deodorant, a 57 g stick free from aluminium salts and baking soda, offered in Cheirosa 40, 62 and 68.

Frequently asked questions

Cheirosa 62 is the gourmand accord that scents the Brazilian Bum Bum Cream: an opening of creamy pistachio, a salted caramel accord and jasmine petals, on a warm vanilla base. It is also found in the mist, the Jelly balm, the Body Badalada lotion, the Brazilian Play shower gel, the Bum Bum scrub and the Rio Deo deodorant.

No. Sol de Janeiro was founded in New York in 2015 by Heela Yang, with Camila Pierotti and Marc Capra. It does, however, draw its imagery from Brazil, from beach culture to bossa nova, and several of its formulas highlight ingredients such as cupuaçu, guarana or açaí. Since 2021, the brand has been majority-owned by the L'Occitane group.

Each number refers, according to the brand, to a year or a moment in Brazilian culture: 40 to the Rio carnival ball, whose first edition dates back to 1840; 59 to the rise of bossa nova; 68 to the Tropicália art movement; 71 to Rio's pastry-making tradition; 76 to the disco era. The number also makes it easy to find the same fragrance across different products.

The mist is sprayed generously over the body, hair or clothes and reapplied during the day. The Jelly balm is a translucent 6.2 g alcohol-free stick that is applied to the skin in a single swipe and slips into a bag for top-ups. It comes in Cheirosa 40, 62 and 68.

The principle is to keep the same number from one step to the next: a scented shower gel or scrub, then a cream or lotion in the same fragrance, and finally the mist or Jelly balm. With Cheirosa 62, the complete routine is available, from the Brazilian Play shower gel to the Rio Deo deodorant. You can also combine two numbers, for example a gourmand cream with a more floral mist.
