The origins of Lalique

René Lalique was born in a village in the Champagne region in 1860. He began his career as a jeweller and quickly gained recognition for his extraordinary designs and unexpected materials. He made his mark across numerous creative movements, including Art Nouveau and Art Déco. In 1907, he had a defining encounter: that of François Coty, a perfumer on the Place Vendôme. Both men sought to make their respective arts more accessible, and from this shared ambition a close collaboration was born. Together, they found a way to industrialise the production of perfume bottles. In doing so, they revolutionised the art of perfumery and made it available to a far wider audience. Thanks to them, fragrance became available at a more accessible price. Lalique is therefore truly at the origins of modern perfumery as we know it today.
