Five O’Clock au Gingembre, British-style luxury according to Serge Lutens
The English ceremonial of Serge Lutens
Five O’Clock au Gingembre is a fragrance whose name is bound to surprise more than a few. Moreover, it resembles no other in the Serge Lutens collection. One might be tempted to think the creator is taking us into uncharted territory. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. Five O’Clock au Gingembre plunges us into an olfactory universe already explored within the house, cleverly renewed and generally always pleasant. Indeed, Serge Lutens likes to say that this name is a nod to the world of writer Agatha Christie… And for good reason! Five O’Clock au Gingembre is nothing less than a tribute to a typically British ceremonial. Its scent of rosy, peppery ginger cannot help but evoke the tea hour. Once again, Serge Lutens seems to sign with it a true work of goldsmithery. He offers us a highly contrasted play, juxtaposing very nuanced yet complementary facets. The whole is particularly elegant and relaxed. What is more, Five O’Clock au Gingembre displays exemplary longevity.
The «So British!» scent of Five O’Clock au Gingembre
If Five O’Clock au Gingembre takes us straight to England, it evokes a British luxury steeped in the colonial era. Moreover, it carries the delicate scent of tea enhanced with spices. Its opening is particularly fresh and unusually masculine. It is composed of ginger and pepper, among other notes. Likewise, the sparkling bergamot enhances the liveliness of the whole and heralds its tea connotation. There, a fruity and balsamic touch makes its appearance. Thus, Serge Lutens reminds us that his fragrance bears no resemblance to a Cologne. A candied plum rounds off the ensemble with its dark, syrupy tonality, accompanied by woody accords. Nevertheless, the hesperidic notes never leave the composition. Here they are presented in the form of lemon peel and candied ginger. The whole is absolutely indulgent and would almost seem to have macerated in a jar of honey. Thus, Five O’Clock au Gingembre appears as a perfect unisex fragrance, capable of satisfying both the virility of some and the sweet tooth of others.
