Datura Noir, the bewitching essence of Serge Lutens
What is Datura Noir?
Serge Lutens is a perfumer who never ceases to create original and intriguing compositions. Each one takes us into an enigmatic universe where mystery is constantly at play. Datura Noir is no exception to this rule – quite the contrary! Its name evokes that of a plant from the Solanaceae family, found in Mexico or in the south-west of the United States. It is an herb rich in alkaloids, which makes it particularly poisonous. In the past, it was considered magical and was often associated with black magic. Indeed, it induced sleep and very intense hallucinations. Many have also nicknamed it "the herb of fools." This dangerous and sometimes deadly drug is today brought to the fore by the talented Serge Lutens, which only heightens the intriguing and addictive character of his fragrance.
Serge Lutens' interpretation of the datura
To evoke this plant, Serge Lutens conceived an opulent nectar with narcotic effluviums. Datura Noir is in reality a solar, creamy and even indulgent fragrance. At first, it almost evokes holidays or monoi. Yet its tempting nature is there only to bewitch you. In the image of the plant bearing the same name, Datura Noir can prove to be a dangerously addictive essence. Its scent is somewhat reminiscent of the poppy flower, though it is more imposing and impertinent. The whole rests on an arrangement of white flowers, in which tuberose, osmanthus and ylang-ylang are particularly recognisable. These three raw materials form a powdery ensemble that faintly recalls the smell of nail varnish. A citrusy note comes, however, to refresh the whole. The composition even feels slightly medicinal. Nevertheless, Datura Noir quickly evolves towards a fruitier and more almond-like accord combining coconut and cherry. Finally, Datura Noir concludes with a milkier, creamier and more vanilla-tinged trail. The whole becomes absolutely irresistible. The effect produced by this fragrance is akin to that of a sunset: at first one perceives intense warmth, which then slowly evaporates to give way to greater freshness. Finally, night gradually falls and gives way to a comforting universe that, against all expectations, has nothing venomous about it.
