Colony… Like a longing to get away

The perfume Colony takes us back to 1938, a very dark period in history. Indeed, on the eve of the Second World War, the climate was already particularly threatening. Rumours of war were circulating and people were dreaming of escape and travel. Jean Patou loved to close his eyes and imagine himself under a blazing sun in the heart of an exotic landscape. This is how he invented the perfume Colony. It is a tribute to the lost French colonies scattered across the oceans, at the other end of the world. This fragrance beautifully captures the wanderlust of the people of that era. Moreover, it must be acknowledged that the French colonies were, at that moment, at the very centre of public attention. Indeed, a Colonial Exhibition of Overseas France had just taken place in the heart of Paris, in 1937. Everyone had been captivated by the beauty of the landscapes of those islands and by the impressive array of fruits and spices found there. It is precisely this facet of the overseas territories that is depicted through the perfume Colony. It evokes sunshine and warm sand. It seems to reveal a light, colourful breath laden with tropical legends. All you have to do is pack your bags – Jean Patou is taking you on a journey…

The exotic scent envisioned by Jean Patou

The brand Jean Patou called upon perfumer Henri Alméras to craft its fragrance. Colony is a highly exotic juice that immediately combines very fruity tones. One finds, in particular, tangy pineapple paired with the freshness of bergamot and candied orange. Thus, the top notes of Colony are particularly invigorating while also being deliciously indulgent. Colony then evolves towards a more suave heart. Ylang-ylang and jasmine deliver their sunny opulence, while carnation and nutmeg add a slightly spicier dimension. Iris then elevates the refinement of the house. Indeed, it is one of the noblest ingredients in the entire perfumer's palette, considered one of the «queens of flowers». Finally, the base of Colony evolves towards more chypré tones. Vetiver combines with sandalwood, amber, oakmoss and patchouli. The whole is rounded off, however, by a leathery, animalic and absolutely bewitching note.
