What a perfume contains: far more than just a scent
A perfume is a formula made up of dozens, sometimes hundreds, of distinct ingredients: natural raw materials, synthetic molecules and fixatives. Each ingredient is selected for its olfactory quality, its stability and its compatibility with the other components. It is this precise combination that explains why two fragrances may seem similar at first glance yet behave very differently on the skin.
Raw materials are generally divided into two broad families: natural ingredients and synthetic molecules. These two worlds are not opposites — they complement each other, and almost all modern perfumes blend them with great skill.
Natural raw materials
Natural ingredients are extracted from plants, flowers, roots, woods, resins or animal substances. Their appeal lies in their complexity: an essential oil of rose, for example, contains several hundred aromatic molecules that interact together to create a living scent, never perfectly identical from one harvest to the next.
Flowers hold a central place: jasmine, rose, tuberose and ylang-ylang are among the most widely used materials in fine perfumery. Extraction can be carried out by steam distillation, by enfleurage — an ancient technique that is now rare — or by solvent extraction, which produces what are known as absolutes, particularly rich and concentrated.
Woods and resins bring depth and longevity: sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, frankincense, benzoin, labdanum. Citrus, such as bergamot or grapefruit, is obtained by cold expression of the peel. Roots — iris, angelica — and seeds — cardamom, coriander — complete this remarkably rich vegetal palette.
Materials of animal origin, long a major feature of classic perfumery, are now almost entirely replaced by synthetic equivalents, for ethical and regulatory reasons. Civet, deer musk and castoreum are no longer used in their natural form in contemporary perfumery.
Synthetic molecules: an essential contribution
Chemistry transformed perfumery in the 20th century, and synthetic molecules now represent a major share of most formulas. Their role is varied and often misunderstood.
Some molecules make it possible to reproduce scents that cannot be found in nature — muguet, for instance, cannot be extracted from the flower using classic processes; its characteristic note is built entirely from synthetic molecules such as Lilial or Hydroxycitronellal. Others help stabilise the formula, improve longevity, or provide projection without weighing down the base note.
Synthetic musks are a telling example: they replace animal musks while offering a far broader olfactory range, from clean and cottony to slightly amber-woody. Iso E Super, a velvety woody molecule, has become a signature ingredient in many contemporary creations. Ambroxan, derived from Ambergris, provides that characteristic sensual warmth found in modern amber fragrances.
Synthesis also makes it possible to work with materials whose extraction would be too costly, too unstable, or insufficient to meet global demand. It also guarantees a consistency that nature, by definition, cannot offer.
Fixatives: keeping the fragrance over time
A perfume is not made up solely of odorous materials. For a fragrance to hold on the skin and evolve harmoniously, the perfumer incorporates fixatives — ingredients whose role is to slow the evaporation of the most volatile notes and bind the whole formula together.
Natural resins such as benzoin, frankincense and labdanum have played this role for centuries. Synthetic musks, mentioned above, are also excellent fixatives. Certain woods — patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood — combine both functions: they bring their own olfactory signature while anchoring the other materials.
Without fixatives, a perfume would evaporate too quickly and unevenly. It is partly thanks to this balance between volatile materials and fixatives that a fragrance's longevity and sillage are built.
The role of alcohol and other solvents
Alcohol is the ingredient present in the greatest quantity in most perfumes. It serves as a carrier: it transports the odorous materials, aids their diffusion into the air and allows for even application on the skin. The alcohol used in perfumery is generally high-purity denatured ethanol.
Depending on the concentration of odorous materials, the proportion of alcohol varies. An Eau de Cologne will contain a large amount of alcohol and little perfume concentrate; an extrait de parfum will reverse this ratio for a denser, more long-lasting formula.
Other solvents can supplement alcohol — vegetal oils in certain alcohol-free formulas, or demineralised water to adjust texture. These choices influence how the fragrance unfolds and clings to the skin.
Natural or synthetic: a false opposition
It is tempting to consider natural as superior to synthetic, or vice versa. In reality, each category has its strengths and its limits. A natural material can cause allergies — some essential oils are strongly allergenic — and its availability depends on climatic and geopolitical factors. A synthetic molecule can be designed to be better tolerated, more stable, and to produce olfactory effects that would be impossible to achieve otherwise.
Contemporary perfumers work with both families without dogmatism. What matters is the final result: a balanced, long-lasting and expressive fragrance. Some houses champion a naturalistic approach — formulas with a high concentration of plant-based raw materials — while others fully embrace the use of iconic synthetic molecules.
