How is a perfume made? Extraction of raw materials, formulation by a nose, maceration, filtration: every step decoded with precision.

From raw material to formula: understanding the base notes

Making a perfume involves blending odorous materials — natural and synthetic — in precise proportions, then leaving them to macerate in alcohol to obtain a stable, balanced fragrance. This is the work of the perfumer, known as a "nose", who refines their formula over months, sometimes years, playing on three levels of notes: top, heart and base.

The raw materials used fall into two categories. Natural materials come from the plant or animal kingdom: flowers, barks, resins, roots, mosses, and, more rarely, certain animal secretions now largely replaced by synthetic equivalents. Synthetic materials, meanwhile, are produced in laboratories. They offer stability, reproducibility and, at times, olfactory nuances that cannot be found in nature. Most contemporary perfumes combine both.

Before even considering how to blend anything, the perfumer works from a palette: a library of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of ingredients whose behaviour, interactions and development over time they know intimately.

Methods of extracting odorous materials

Everything begins with extraction. To obtain the odorous substance from a natural raw material, several techniques coexist depending on the nature of the plant and the desired quality.

Steam distillation is the most widespread method. The plant material is subjected to a flow of steam that carries off the aromatic molecules. As the steam condenses, it releases a floral eau on one side — such as rose water — and an essential oil on the other. This is how lavender, eucalyptus and vetiver are produced.

Solvent extraction is used for more fragile materials, such as certain flowers whose odour molecules cannot withstand heat. The solvent dissolves the aromatic compounds to first obtain a concrete — a waxy substance — then an absolute after treatment with alcohol. Grasse Rose and jasmine sambac are often treated in this way.

Cold expression, meanwhile, is reserved for Citrus. Orange, lemon or bergamot zests are mechanically pressed to release their essential oils without the use of heat. This is what preserves their characteristic freshness.

Finally, enfleurage — an ancient and now extremely rare technique — involves allowing odour molecules to be absorbed by a cold fat. It has been almost entirely abandoned in industrial production, but continues to be practised on an artisanal scale for exceptionally delicate materials.

Formulation: the art of blending the notes

Once the ingredients have been gathered, the work of formulation begins. The perfumer builds their fragrance around what is known as the fragrance pyramid: top, heart and base notes. This architecture describes not only the composition, but also its development over time.

Top notes are the ones perceived first, in the seconds following the spray. Light and volatile, they evaporate quickly. They often feature Citrus, fresh herbs or light spices. Heart notes form the body of the fragrance, what is perceived after a few minutes. Floral, spicy, fruity or green, they define the perfume's main character. Base notes, finally, are the heaviest and most persistent. Musks, resins, woods, vanilla — they remain on the skin for several hours after application and leave the final trace.

The perfumer works through successive trials, adjusting proportions to the thousandth of a gram. A formula may contain anywhere from a dozen to several hundred different ingredients. Every modification shifts the overall balance. A slight addition of patchouli can darken an entire composition; a touch of bergamot can considerably lighten its profile.

This iterative process takes time. Major houses have their formulas assessed by internal panels, test longevity on different skin types, check stability over time and ensure compliance with current regulations on allergens.

Dilution, maceration and filtration

Once the formula has been validated, industrial production can begin. The perfume concentrate — the raw "juice" — is diluted in high-purity ethyl alcohol, generally between 90 and 96 proof. The ratio between concentrate and alcohol determines the final concentration: eau de Cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum or extrait de parfum. After dilution, the blend enters the maceration phase. This step, which lasts from a few weeks to several months depending on the house, allows the different molecules to harmonise. Chemical interactions take hold, rough edges soften, and the perfume acquires its final olfactory coherence. This is a step often overlooked in mainstream descriptions, yet it is decisive for the final quality.

Next comes cold filtration. The blend is chilled to negative temperatures to trigger the crystallisation of waxes and fatty compounds naturally present in certain raw materials. These deposits are then filtered out, which guarantees the perfume's clarity in the flacon and prevents any clouding at low temperatures. This is known as "chillproofing".

From laboratory to flacon: the final steps

The filtered perfume is then checked in the laboratory. Its colour, density and scent are compared against the validated reference, along with its regulatory compliance. This quality control may involve chromatographic analyses to ensure the composition matches the formula and that no allergen exceeds authorised thresholds.

Bottling is the final stage of production. The flacons — often produced separately, sometimes by specialist glassmakers — are filled, capped and labelled. For major houses, this stage is often fully automated. For independent creators and niche houses, it may still be partly done by hand, adding an artisanal dimension to the finished product.

What is ultimately perceived on the skin is therefore the result of a precise sequence: extraction of materials, rigorous formulation, patient maceration, technical filtration and careful packaging. Every step contributes to ensuring the fragrance expresses exactly what the perfumer had imagined — no more, no less.
