L’Eau d’Armoise, the refreshing Eau de Politesse by Serge Lutens
Known for its many medicinal properties, mugwort and its medieval imagery transport us here to the heart of its powerful aromatic scents.
"Before my hand absent-mindedly detached a leaf from a bush that I crushed between index finger and thumb, who could have foreseen that one day in a bottle, mugwort would speak to me?"
Serge Lutens is not a simple perfumer. He is above all an artist with a highly personal vision of perfumery. He acts more like a painter or a poet, allowing himself to be guided by his inspiration rather than by the trends of the moment. Thus, Serge Lutens does not hesitate to explore unexpected territories and to venture down still uncharted paths. For several years now, Serge Lutens has been enriching his collection of Eaux de Politesse. Very different from the brand's previous ranges, this latest collection brings together fragrances endowed with exceptional purity. L’Eau d’Armoise is part of it and focuses above all on the aromatic breath of this raw material.
The Eaux de Politesse collection by Serge Lutens
Let us first set the scene by discovering in more detail what the Eaux de Politesse fragrances are. It all began in 2010, when Serge Lutens uttered this phrase: "Luxury begins with cleanliness". He, who had until then accustomed us to creating very powerful compositions laden with balm or spices, seemed this time to be moving towards a very different universe. The Eaux de Politesse are directly inspired by the Eaux de Cologne of the past. They preserve their freshness and transparency, while highlighting the nobility of rigorously selected raw materials. Contemporary and abstract, these essences integrate fully into the universe of Serge Lutens. When the creator presented his collection, he described it as follows: "To emerge or to vanish, each thing in its own time". His previous fragrances had a habit of emerging. The Eaux de Politesse, on the other hand, prefer to vanish. With the utmost restraint, these are presented in a common bottle forming a thick square of glass, whose weight is an absolute hallmark of refinement. This square with bevelled edges also recalls the appearance of the bottle of the iconic Chanel N°5. Nevertheless, this bottle is topped by a cap from the Gratte-Ciel collection by Serge Lutens, in a translucent edition. The crinkled walls of this bottle are the result of exceptional glasswork. Behind the very pure design of L’Eau d’Armoise lies in reality an infinitely elaborate work, the fruit of the exceptional creative vision of Serge Lutens.
The aromatic scent of L’Eau d’Armoise
As always with Serge Lutens, the fragrance L’Eau d’Armoise is accompanied by a most enigmatic quote. "Before my hand absent-mindedly detached a leaf from a bush that I crushed between index finger and thumb, who could have foreseen that one day in a bottle, mugwort would speak to me?" From that moment on, L’Eau d’Armoise immediately seems to be the fruit of nature. Originally, mugwort is a plant famous for its medicinal properties. Here, it transports us to the heart of a world. Of course, this raw material is sublimated here by the addition of other ingredients, placed more in the background. However, Serge Lutens has remained very mysterious this time about his recipe. From this juice emanates a mentholated and camphorated impression, at once fruity and vegetal. The typical medicinal scent of mugwort is present, without overdoing it. The singularity of this fragrance is immediate, ultimately resting on a more discreet yet equally memorable woody accord.
L’Eau d’Armoise, the new Eau de Politesse by Serge Lutens
Serge Lutens is a fragrance creator unlike any other, whose universe is aimed more specifically at discerning connoisseurs of luxury fragrances. The perfumes of Serge Lutens are always imbued with a great deal of mystery, and the creator always strives to reveal as little as possible about them. Today, the universe of Serge Lutens consists of several collections, all of which share the common trait of using infinitely refined raw materials of irreproachable quality. Serge Lutens conjures up surprise and associates it with perfection. Today, he reveals his new L’Eau d’Armoise, drawn from an olfactory assortment: the Eaux de Politesse.
The Eaux de Politesse, the celebrated collection by Serge Lutens
First of all, let us note that the new L’Eau d’Armoise belongs to a collection bringing together 6 different essences: L’Eau d’Armoise, Santal Blanc, Fleurs de Citronnier, Gris Clair, L’Eau froide and l’Eau de Paille. Each of these juices highlights a very particular ingredient and sublimates it through the addition of other raw materials in the background. Moreover, this assortment also has another purpose: to reveal purity and to bring out the natural cleanliness of the person who wears it. The Eaux de Politesse stem from a simple phrase uttered by Serge Lutens in 2010: "Luxury begins with cleanliness". With this simple statement, the creator breathed a new vision of fragrance into being. He decided to make it an airy and fresh collection, stripped of all that is superfluous. The Eaux de Politesse are like cleansed visions of perfumery. These are compositions entirely freed from the heady aspect of certain fragrances.
L’Eau d’Armoise, a purifying scent
Presented in a cubic bottle sculpted like a jewel, L’Eau d’Armoise proudly proclaims its belonging to the Eaux de Politesse collection. As its name suggests, mugwort is its central ingredient. This plant gives this composition an aromatic and wild character. Close to fern, mugwort is at once bitter and herbaceous. Now, if this ingredient makes its way into this collection today, it is not solely for its scent. Mugwort is also associated with a strong purifying power. In the Far East, mugwort has been celebrated for its purifying virtues for centuries. There it is consumed as a broth in certain rituals, and mugwort figurines are even hung at front doors to protect homes from harmful influences. In this sense, L’Eau d’Armoise by Serge Lutens possesses an almost sacred dimension! As always, this fragrance is accompanied by a most enigmatic quote: "To emerge or to vanish, each thing in its own time". Everyone glimpses a message in it that is their own. Nevertheless, this suggests that L’Eau d’Armoise can be by turns fiery or more serene. In contact with the skin, it emerges and then vanishes, leaving in its wake only a sensation of purity.
