The expression "raw material" is borrowed from industrial and artisanal vocabulary, where it refers to the crude substance needed to manufacture a finished product. In perfumery, its use became established gradually over the course of the nineteenth century, as organic chemistry opened the way to the creation of synthetic aromas and the trade became structured around a rigorous logic of formulation. Among the most widely used natural raw materials are Rose de Mai absolute — extracted from the petals of Rosa centifolia grown in Grasse — vanilla in the form of oleoresin or absolute, vetiver distilled from the roots, and patchouli originating from Indonesia. These ingredients are often among the most expensive in a formula, due to the quantity of plant material needed to obtain them.
On the synthetic side, musk Ambrette, Iso E Super, Calone and dihydromyrcenol are examples that have become classics in modern formulations. Iso E Super, for instance, brings a characteristic woody, velvety facet found in many masculine parfums of the 1990s and 2000s. Calone, discovered in the 1980s, opened up the family of marine and aquatic fragrances. These ingredients illustrate chemistry's ability to widen the perfumer's palette well beyond what nature alone can offer.
