Nuit de Cellophane, an enormous bouquet created by Serge Lutens
Serge Lutens enjoys playing the florist
Nuit de Cellophane made its appearance in 2009 and very quickly proved easier to wear than its predecessors. Indeed, Serge Lutens' compositions lack nothing in the way of temperament and are most often reserved for initiated customers. His strange name also refers to the transparent plastic film commonly used to wrap flowers. Indeed, Nuit de Cellophane is a particularly floral composition. This perfume is thus described as an airy, silky and easily accessible juice. Perhaps Serge Lutens had grown tired of being eternally misunderstood? Nevertheless, his talented signature is always clearly recognisable, to our greatest pleasure. Nuit de Cellophane is a perfume of delicacy that delivers a discreet sensuality. What is more, whereas one would expect a nocturnal scent from it, it instead conveys a solar sensation. Furthermore, it also appears as an excellent way to discover the often initiatory perfumery of Serge Lutens.
Nuit de Cellophane, a concentrate of osmanthus
Nuit de Cellophane is presented as a jasmine-tinged composition enriched with fruity notes, but clearly dominated by the sustained presence of osmanthus. This is indeed clearly evoked in Serge Lutens' own description. He explains that his perfume emanates from «white or orange flowers. Clustered together, [their] small corollas burst into a scent of mandarin jasmine, he says.» Moreover, this aspect is further accentuated by the sweet and tangy presence of mandarin in the top notes. This is then associated with the sweeter aspect of myrrh. Whatever the case, Nuit de Cellophane displays a very aldehydic and effusive opening. The osmanthus then appears with more roundness and voluptuousness. It reveals its slightly apricot-like effluvia and blends with the greener aspect of tuberose. Its more leathery side, in turn, is underlined by a stroke of civet and a hint of castoreum. The sillage of Nuit de Cellophane becomes absolutely sensual and displays, at the same time, an exemplary tenacity. This is rare enough in a floral to be worth noting. In this sense, this work could only be the fruit of the work of the talented Serge Lutens.
