Vegan Parfum
Vegan parfums: ingredients to avoid, difference from cruelty-free, certifications and a selection of formulas presented as vegan by their brands.
A vegan parfum contains no ingredient of animal origin in its formula: no beeswax, no honey, no lanolin, and none of the historic animal materials such as natural musk or ambergris. This criterion concerns composition alone; it says nothing about laboratory testing. Before buying, two checks are essential: reading the INCI list and consulting the brand's official communication.
Which ingredients make a parfum non-vegan?
Traditional perfumery used several materials of animal origin. Some have disappeared from modern formulas, while others remain present in conventional ranges.
- Natural musk: secretions from deer, now replaced by synthetic musks in almost every formula. The term "musk" on packaging almost always refers to a synthetic molecule, but it is worth confirming.
- Ambergris: an intestinal concretion from the sperm whale, very rare and costly. Today's amber notes are synthetic.
- Civet and castoreum: animal glands formerly used as fixatives, now replaced by synthetic equivalents.
- Beeswax, honey, propolis: still present in certain formulas, particularly scented eaux and body mists.
- Lanolin: derived from sheep's wool, sometimes used as an excipient in creamy formulas.
- Animal keratin and milk: found in a few scented eaux or moisturising mists.
A parfum may display "natural" or "botanical" notes and still contain beeswax. Reading the INCI list remains the only way to check.
Vegan and cruelty-free: two distinct commitments
These two notions are frequently confused. They do not cover the same scope.
- Vegan: no ingredient of animal origin in the formula, at any stage.
- Cruelty-free: no testing on animals, whether on the finished product or on the ingredients that make it up.
A parfum can be vegan without being cruelty-free, and vice versa. For a consistent commitment, both criteria must be checked separately. Some brands display both transparently; others mention only one. If in doubt, you can contact the brand directly. Our cruelty-free guide details the certifications and labels worth knowing on this second point.
How to check that a parfum is vegan
Three levels of verification are possible, from the simplest to the most rigorous.
- The INCI list: mandatory on packaging in Europe. It lists all ingredients in descending order of concentration. Look out for terms such as beeswax, cera alba, lanolin, honey, lac (milk), keratin or any animal derivative.
- The brand's communication: some brands explicitly state "vegan formula" on their website or packaging. This claim holds the brand accountable, even without third-party certification.
- Independent certifications: The Vegan Society (stylised sunflower) and EVE Vegan are the two most credible references. They involve an audit of the formula and the supply chain. The absence of a logo does not mean a product is not vegan; certification comes at a cost that not every brand chooses to bear.

Frequently asked questions
No. Musk notes in contemporary parfums are almost exclusively synthetic molecules, with no animal origin. The term "musk" describes an olfactory family, not necessarily an animal ingredient. To be certain, check the INCI list or contact the brand directly.
A natural parfum is formulated from raw materials of plant or animal origin, without chemical synthesis. A vegan parfum excludes any animal material, whether natural or synthetic. The two notions do not overlap: a natural parfum may contain beeswax and not be vegan.
The claim holds the brand accountable, but without an independent audit, it relies on self-declaration. Certifications such as The Vegan Society or EVE Vegan offer an additional guarantee through third-party control. In the absence of certification, checking the INCI list remains the most reliable verification.
