Does a parfum really have an expiry date?

An unopened parfum generally keeps for between 3 and 5 years, sometimes longer depending on its composition. European regulations do not impose a strict expiry date for products with a shelf life of more than thirty months, but they do require a Period After Opening (PAO): this symbol, shaped like an open pot and followed by a number — 12M, 24M, 36M — indicates the recommended number of months of use after the flacon is first opened.

But this indication is above all a commercial guarantee, not a definitive verdict. An unopened parfum, stored under good conditions, can remain stable well beyond this period. Conversely, a poorly stored flacon can deteriorate within just a few months. The expiry date of a parfum therefore depends as much on the formulation as on the conditions in which it is kept.

How long does a parfum last?

As a general rule, an unopened parfum stored correctly can remain stable for between three and five years. Once opened, the recommended lifespan most often ranges from eighteen months to three years depending on the brand. These ranges, however, vary considerably depending on the nature of the ingredients used.

Parfums with a floral dominant note or hesperidic notes — those based on citrus, bergamot or lemon — are generally more fragile. These molecules are naturally volatile and sensitive to oxidation. The top notes, ephemeral by definition, are the first to change. Formulas rich in woody, musky or amber notes are, by contrast, far more stable and often age better, sometimes even developing extra depth over time.

The concentration of raw materials also plays a role. An extrait de parfum, more concentrated and containing less alcohol, tends to withstand time better than an eau de toilette. The proportion of alcohol and water in the formula directly affects how quickly the aromatic compounds oxidise.

How to recognise a parfum that has turned

Before throwing out a flacon as a precaution, it helps to know how to identify the concrete signs of a juice that has turned. The first indicator is visual: if the liquid, initially clear or lightly tinted, has taken on a noticeably darker or cloudy colour, this is often a sign of advanced oxidation.

The nose, however, remains the best tool. An altered parfum frequently gives off a sour, vinegary scent, or one reminiscent of old plastic. The original notes are masked or distorted, and projection can be considerably reduced. In some cases, the scent simply becomes rancid, similar to that of oxidised cooking oil.

Finally, if you notice slight skin irritation after applying a parfum you had previously used without any issue, this is a signal not to ignore. Oxidised molecules can become slightly irritating for certain sensitive skin types, even though the health risk generally remains limited for a parfum that has simply aged.

The factors that speed up degradation

Understanding what damages a parfum helps you adopt the right habits. Light is enemy number one: UV rays degrade aromatic molecules quickly and irreversibly. Displaying a clear glass flacon on a dressing table bathed in sunlight is one of the most common mistakes.

Warmth is the second risk factor. Temperature fluctuations — a bathroom swinging between spray and air conditioning, or a window ledge exposed to the sun — weaken formulas and speed up oxidation. The ideal storage temperature is a constant 15 to 20 degrees.

Air is the third culprit. Every time the flacon is opened, a small amount of oxygen enters the juice. A flacon that is only partly full, with plenty of air at the base note, oxidises faster than one that is nearly full. This is why using a parfum regularly is, paradoxically, sometimes preferable to leaving it half-used for years.

Humidity, finally, weakens flacons with screw caps or less airtight sprays. A humid bathroom is never the ideal place to store your parfums, even though it remains common practice in most households.

Storing your parfums correctly to extend their lifespan

Good parfum storage practices are simple to put in place. Keep your flacons away from direct light, in a cool, dry place. A drawer, a closed cabinet or even the original box are effective and inexpensive solutions.

If you own several opened flacons, it may be wise to finish them one at a time rather than using them all in slow rotation. A flacon used regularly over six to twelve months is less likely to deteriorate than one opened sporadically over three years.

For collectors or niche parfum enthusiasts investing in high-value flacons, some choose to store them in the refrigerator — in a dedicated compartment, away from food. This method does indeed slow down oxidation, but the thermal shock from repeated in-and-out use can also weaken certain formulas. It remains an option best reserved for precious, rarely used pieces.

As for travel flacons or decants, their lifespan is often shorter, as the containers are not always as airtight as the original flacons. Use them within a few weeks of transfer to enjoy them fully.

The expiry date of a parfum is therefore not an absolute truth. It provides an indicative guideline, but it is your nose — along with a careful eye on the colour of the juice — that remains the best guide for judging whether a flacon still deserves a place on your skin.
