Nuits Indiennes, a fragrance that almost never came to be
Nuits Indiennes is a fragrance that takes us back to the heart of the 90s. Nevertheless, it is worth delving into the history of la maison Jean-Louis Scherrer to learn a little more about it. It was in 1979 that Jean-Louis Scherrer decided to launch his very first perfume. A year later, this Haute Couture designer received the Dé d'or of the Parisian Haute Couture for his Russian collection. Everything seemed to be going well for this brilliant creator. On 11 April 1990, he decided to partner with Seibu and Hermès to secure the future of his brand. His contract stipulated that he was to remain artistic director of the house until 2000. However, following disagreements, Jean-Louis Scherrer resigned from his position in 1992, leaving his place to Érik Mortensen. Yet the perfume Nuits Indiennes was very much the work of Jean-Louis Scherrer. It was he who conceived this exceptional juice and who expressed the will behind its creation. So, even though he was no longer in his post at the time of its release, his essence nevertheless saw the light of day.
The oriental scent of Jean-Louis Scherrer's perfume
To develop his formula, Jean-Louis Scherrer called upon the talent of perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer. She was considered a reliable talent at the time and remains, to this day, one of the most renowned perfumers in the world, after more than 20 years at Givaudan. She envisioned one of the most seductive oriental fragrances imaginable. Nuits Indiennes opens with an invigorating composition based on multiple citrus notes such as bergamot, lemon and mandarin. However, peach counterbalances this sparkling scent with its juicy, sweet voluptuousness. Then Nuits Indiennes evolves towards a more floral heart, highlighting the opulence of jasmine as well as the airy elegance of lilac, lily of the valley and heliotrope. Nuits Indiennes then gradually moves towards a deeper base of benzoin. Tonka bean and sandalwood soften the whole with their creaminess, while civet renders the ensemble particularly sensual. Nuits Indiennes is housed in a highly architectural bottle that perfectly reflects the couture image of la maison Jean-Louis Scherrer. Its packaging, meanwhile, is utterly enchanting, appearing to be swept through by a mesmerising rain of gold.
