Amber, an essential raw material in perfumery

Amber has been fascinating mankind for millennia. It is an ingredient steeped in legends that has long enriched the rituals of the Thousand and One Nights. In reality, natural amber is made up of the resin of a conifer, first in liquid form and then crystallising in the air through oxidation. However, it is not used in perfumery at all. Natural amber releases no scent whatsoever. It is used primarily to make jewellery and ornaments. Furthermore, some attribute protective powers to it and regard it as a lucky charm. What is referred to as amber in the olfactory world is, in fact, an accord of balsamic notes. This accord was born in the perfume Jicky by Guerlain. It is composed of ingredients such as tonka bean, coumarin, labdanum, vanillin, patchouli, benzoin, incense and opoponax. It is therefore important not to confuse this scent with that of grey amber, an element of animal origin derived from the sperm whale, whose smell is shaped by ocean currents, salt, wind and sun.
