Ralph Lauren and Polo, a long love story
Polo, a sport in its own right
When people talk about polo, they most often think of the famous garment resembling a T-shirt. Yet that is not its only meaning. In fact, that is not even its primary meaning for the Ralph Lauren brand. Indeed, the label chose this equestrian sport as its emblem. Moreover, the Ralph Lauren logo is none other than a polo player. As a point of interest, this sport was discovered in 1871 in India by a group of English officers. It was, however, slightly reinterpreted by the British aristocracy until it became the sport we know today. Beyond the athletic spirit it embodies, polo also resonates as a mark of luxury distinction. It is, in fact, a discipline most often practiced by wealthy men. Although it is becoming increasingly accessible, it remains, even today, associated with the image of an elite sport. Likewise, Ralph Lauren seems to find itself in this image. According to the brand, polo exudes a perfect blend of dynamism, refinement and an innate sense of taste. It is therefore entirely logical that Ralph Lauren decided to translate this sport into a fragrance. Polo thus targets elegant, driven and passionate men.
The unique signature crafted by Ralph Lauren
In order to create his fragrance Polo in 1978, Ralph Lauren called upon perfumer Carlos Benaïm. He then crafted a powerful and distinctive fragrance. As suggested by the intense green colour of its bottle, Polo contains a fresh grass accord. This emanates directly from a blend of basil, oregano, thyme and coriander. Nevertheless, Polo quickly evolves towards a heart of chamomile and marjoram. However, spices come to liven up this otherwise too reserved ensemble. Notably present are cloves and allspice. Then, its effervescent scent gives way to a warmer base of oakmoss and bourbon vetiver. Here, patchouli combines its intensity with that of leather and tobacco. The result becomes one of the most sensual and virile. Finally, it is worth knowing that this essence has been revisited many times. In 2008, Ralph Lauren celebrated its 30th anniversary by creating Polo Modern Réserve. In 2014, it further enhanced its scent with oud, a resinous ingredient from the Middle East. Lastly, 2015 saw the launch of Polo Supreme Leather, more focused on noble, tanned leather accompanied by spices.
The Eau de Toilette Polo by Ralph Lauren
The first men's eau de toilette created by Ralph Lauren, Polo has become a great classic, a fragrance rooted in tradition yet extremely contemporary.
Its fresh, tonic, herbaceous opening gives way to a very masculine heart of leather and tobacco, which extends into the woody base of patchouli and blends into the depth and warmth of oakmoss.
Notes: Canadian Pine, Eucalyptus, Coriander, Oregano, Cloves, Cedar, Vetiver and Patchouli.
