Ambre Sultan
Eau de Parfum
4.5/5 | 38 reviewsAmbre Sultan, a juice from Morocco
Ambre Sultan is undoubtedly one of the most famous fragrances by Serge Lutens. It is an ode to oriental scents. Indeed, the creator travelled to Morocco on numerous occasions and even lived there for several years. It is therefore entirely logical that he wished to pay tribute to this country so dear to his heart. It was during his first trip to Marrakech, in 1968, that the inspiration for Ambre Sultan came to him. He was offered a piece of amber and kept it as a souvenir, carefully enclosed in a thuya burl box, for years. Over time, however, the scent of this raw material altered. The contents and the container gradually blended together, releasing an absolutely unique fragrance. It was precisely this scent that became Serge Lutens' source of inspiration. In other words, Ambre Sultan is a concentrate of emotions emanating from a memory imbued with all the warmth of Morocco.
The mythical scent of Serge Lutens
Most of the time, Serge Lutens fragrances are caricatures of a main trait distorted until it becomes sublime. Thus, Ambre Sultan is a concentrate of cistus and labdanum. Many describe this juice as "warm, round, sensual and addictive." It opens with a multitude of aromatics and spices. One notices the presence of myrtle, bay leaf, oregano, coriander and cinnamon. Equally, incense envelops the whole with its intensity. Angelica appears at the heart and brings a greener, powderier note to the ensemble. Nevertheless, the spices are ever-present, and this time it is cumin that dominates. Finally, Ambre Sultan evolves towards a smoother base of sandalwood, patchouli, benzoin and balsam of tolu. The dominant amber accord is formed by the combination of labdanum resin and vanilla. Ambre Sultan thus became a cult fragrance from its very launch, and its success has never waned more than 20 years after its release. Although its composition has been copied countless times, Ambre Sultan has never been equalled.
The Eau de Parfum Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens
Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens. The pivot of the fragrance: essentially a classic amber enriched with powdery and vanilla notes from the resins of small Siam trees that produce benzoin, as well as styrax and tolu trees in Brazil. These natural resins are blended with cistus labdanum, the warm and sensual essence.
